Even if you were not born optimistic you can teach yourself and your children to see the positive side in most any situation. Clearly, the situation doesn't change, but the shift in thinking balances our perceptions and leaves us feeling that we can handle it. – Deanna Beech, Ph.D.
As you head into this Holiday Season it’s easy to feel disappointed. Everyone is affected in some way by the risk and restrictions imposed by COVID. Grandparents aren’t traveling. Social gatherings are smaller, or not at all. Even if you plan to brave the pandemic and travel, your destination will be different. Curious to see what the traditional New Year’s Eve party in Time Square is going to look like this year.
But just because it’s different doesn’t mean that it has to be bad. This is the first winter holiday of the pandemic. It’s already different. It will be remembered, and it can be special. Instead of getting down cast with the limitations, let’s see them as challenges. Christmas Eve can be filled with Zoom cocktail parties and friends. The bonus here is the fact that even the friends that are far way can make it to festivities. Grandparents’ can be there Christmas morning on the big screen TV. And it’s the perfect time to bring in (or bring back) some family traditions. Read A Christmas Carol out loud to your kids or have them read it to you. Watch it’s A Wonderful Life. Bake cookies. Work on bikes and doll houses with your kids. Stay in your PJ’s till noon playing with all the toys.
While you are in these moments – focus. Don’t let the phone distract you. Look at the smiles on the faces around you. Hear the laughter. Feel the hugs. Immerse yourself in the moment. These are the times that family stores are made of. Drink them in and make the legend.
Wishing you all warm and wonderful holidays!
