Even if you were not born optimistic you can teach yourself and your children to see the positive side in most any situation. Clearly, the situation doesn't change, but the shift in thinking balances our perceptions and leaves us feeling that we can handle it. – Deanna Beech, Ph.D.
Rebranding: Physical Distancing - YES Social Distancing - no
Between science, the media and politics the concept of social distancing and social isolation have become confusing and contentious, and it was always a poor choice of phrasing. We are not trying to be be socially distant from one another, thinking of it from this point of view causes us to struggle with feelings of wanting to be close and show that we trust in our friends while pushing them away.
But, if we switch to calling the required 6+ foot distance what it is - physical distance for safety - we get around this discomfort. We need to engage in physical distancing because we are socially close. We care about each other.
Let’s separate the two issues. This way we can keep our close social relationships and keep our physical distance.
